How could residents of Paradise and Magalia survive a natural disaster?
Level 1- Identify Threats
Step 1: Determine what kinds of natural disasters threaten Paradise and Magalia. Check out the California Department of Public Health's website. Fill out the Types of Threats Notes page. Be sure to think about natural disasters that the website doesn't list.
Step 3: Educate the public. Create some kind of media to educate the public about the different natural disasters in our area. Some ideas are a video, commercial, radio announcement, brochure or pamphlet, or poster. Include what people prepare for and how to react in the case of each kind of natural disaster.
Level 2- Examine Landscape
Step 1: Choose 1 natural disaster to focus on for your project. Step 2: Map out the Paradise/Magalia area. Consider possible challenges specific to your chosen natural disaster. Step 3: Field trip to examine local area, including water sources and possible gathering points.
Level 3- Question Experts
Local leaders will come to class to discuss current plans and challenges for the town regarding natural disasters and disaster preparedness.
Level 4- Form a Plan!
Students will make Survival Plans addressing the following categories: Location Resources Shelter Transportation Preparedness
Categories in the Survival Plan should answer these GUIDING QUESTIONS.
